Her stories and essays have appeared in numerous publications, including <strong><em>The Missouri Review<\/em><\/strong>, \u00a0<strong><em>Oregon Humanities<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Swink<\/em><\/strong>, \u00a0and <strong><em>Propeller Quarterly<\/em><\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alan-rose.com\/wordfest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/People_Like_You.jpg\" alt=\"people_like_you\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Cheryl Strayed<\/strong>, author of the national bestselling <strong><em>Wild<\/em><\/strong>, called <em>People Like You<\/em> \u201ca powerful debut by a writer of immense talent. They will talk about the process they used in working together and how the piece took its final form through their back-and-forth collaboration, and then will perform the song, which was premiered at this past Summerfest at the lake.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alan-rose.com\/wordfest\/?attachment_id=646\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-646\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-646\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alan-rose.com\/wordfest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/RitaBowles-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"ritabowles\" width=\"228\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alan-rose.com\/wordfest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/RitaBowles-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alan-rose.com\/wordfest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/RitaBowles-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.alan-rose.com\/wordfest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/RitaBowles-768x767.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.alan-rose.com\/wordfest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/RitaBowles.jpg 917w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/a>Rita Bowles <\/strong>will be reading excerpts from her novel, <strong><em>The Gods of Clover<\/em><\/strong>, a family saga set in an English village called Clover-on-the-Wold in the 1960s. The story is told through the voices of the women in the family made up of Arthur Davenport, an alcoholic, his depressed yet feisty Irish wife Fiona, and their daughter, Eileen.<\/p>\n<p>Rita grew up in a small Cheshire village, similar to Clover-on-the-Wold. A graduate of the University of Utah in Creative Writing, she\u2019s written two books\u00a0of poetry, one of which won the Pearle M Olsen Poetry Prize and was published\u00a0by the Utah Arts Council. \u00a0She lived in Washougal for\u00a0ten years before moving to Longview two and a half years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There will be an open mic period following the presentations.<\/p>\n<p>The monthly gathering of readers and writers meets the second Tuesday of each month, 6:00-8:00 PM, at Cassava, 1333 Broadway in Longview.
