WordFest in quarantine until new year
What's happening with WordFest?
We had hoped to resume meeting in person by the fall. Unfortunately, the delta variant has upset a lot of plans including ours. With Cowlitz County's low vaccination rate and high hospitalization rate, it does not feel safe to meet in groups at this time.

What about WordFest on Zoom meetings?
Here, too, life has thrown us a curveball (sports analogies are not my forte, but I think this is correct.) Our wonderful editor Bethany Glenn broke her clavicle and has been out of action, and our equally wonderful Zoom director Vikki J. Carter has returned to a very full teaching schedule and can no longer afford the time it takes to record and host the monthly meetings.

What's happening with the Cassava-space?
New owners Jacob and Jacqueline Misiak have renovated and opened up the room more, and will soon be offering Longview a cozy brew pub: Broadway Barrel Room. They are excited about hosting WordFest events in the new year with a new menu and beverages beyond beer. Be watching for their grand opening.

What do we do between now and the new year? Is life even worth living without WordFest?
A number of writers had signed up to read in the fall. They will all be rescheduled for when we resume WordFest in the new year.

I will continue sending out this newsletter, which is avidly read by literally tens of people each month, so email me...

1) A description of your new book--we'll promote it.
2) Your poetry--especially welcome are poems capturing this time we are living through.
3) Books you loved and want to recommend to others--send me 200-300 words describing the book and why you loved it.
4) Other literary news--writers conferences, awards, an agent is interested in your manuscript, your mother loved your short story, whatever.

So, yes, we will get through this!

Here's what you'll find below:

Poetry Corner --

"The Truth"

As the replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial visits Cowlitz County this week, local poet Lorraine Merrin offers this poignant "postcard from the past." The poem is appearing in  the September issue of the journal Thema, out of Metaine, Louisiana..

The Truth

There it was in the mailbox,
a thin glassine envelope
holding a tattered postcard

sent some fifty years ago,
with his new mailing address
so she could write to him

after his unit went back
to 'Nam for a second tour.
She'd always thought

he'd just left her behind,
like his truck and his dog,
and the future they'd planned.

Book Review

The Sweetness of Water
Nathan Harris

During times of great upheaval, old norms and traditions are swept away and people must often find new ways of relating to others, even within their own families.

At the end of the civil war and the early days of Reconstruction, Union soldiers patrol the streets of Old Ox, Georgia, an occupying army to maintain order and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the enslaved peoples of the South. It is a time of bitterness, disorientation, and uncertainty...

Books People Are Excited About...

Dayle Olson writes, “In Paulette Jiles’ novel, the reader is introduced to the tumultuous, lawless landscape of post-Civil War Texas, peopled by anarchists, opportunists, the displaced, the lost, and the traumatized. In short, it’s no place for a 10-year-old girl without a home or family..."

Read Dayle's full recommendation in the September 15 issue of The Columbia River Reader.

Dayle Olson's 2019 Columbia River poem, “Water Highway/SR 4 at Stella,” was selected for inclusion in Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna’s, Washington Poetic Routes, sponsored by Humanities Washington. Her short story, “What Sets Us Free,” was chosen in 2019 by Seaside Libraries for publication in their annual anthology. Dayle lives with husband David in Cathlamet.

A Bit of Whimsy

Photo-reflection

                Learning from the Seasons

In memory of Gary Rose, 1951-2021

                               Watching autumn do its thing,

                               slowly overtaking summer,

day by day, leaf by leaf,

                               blossoms dying without grief.

                               It's just what they do,

and they seem to know it.

                               I wonder at how effortlessly,

                               how perfectly the seasons pass.

                               No grandstanding, no defiant show,

                               they just...let...go.
